This ain’t no yuppie flu

IT WAS one thing saying I could make a comeback, and another thing actually achieving it. Something else felt wrong. I felt shattered all the time, not just through work or training, but even when I had woken up from a good night’s sleep. Sometimes I didn’t feel like getting up at all because my body felt so weak. As usual I just tried to push through everything, but the harder I pushed, the more acute my tiredness became.

I got to the stage that when I was having some sort of blackout Jo thought that I was having a kind of seizure. I ended up having to go on the sick because I was at times so tired that I would stay in bed for days. This went on for some months. I would get days when I felt things were going well again and have a period where I was back training and feeling well, but then all of a sudden I would just feel like someone had pulled the plug out and I had hardly any energy at all. I thought I was just being lazy and time after time, I tried to push through it.

My philosophy of if something is in your way just keep pushing until you get through it wasn’t working. It was one of the most frustrating times in my life and at times I doubted my sanity.

I was eventually referred to a neurologist by my doctor. He was one of the country’s leading specialists and even in the first meeting after he had listened to the health problems that I had, he stated that he didn’t think I was experiencing epileptic fits. He arranged for many tests over the next couple of months to analyse my heart, brain and to also look at any chemical imbalances. No stone was left unturned; I had light tests, while probes were attached to my head to try to find out why I was having these seizure- like episodes. I had so many blood tests that I thought the nurse was a vampire in disguise and each and every time, the test came back and no problems were found.

I knew deep down it wasn’t laziness, because I am what people called “driven”. I became paranoid that people thought I was swinging the lead, but I wasn’t. Something was wrong, but what it was, no one seemed to know. I admitted to the doctor that I was depressed but who the hell wouldn’t have been? I had been an athlete but now I was turning into a couch potato and at times when I was on my own, I really did question if what I was experiencing was real.

Months went by of what me and Jo termed as “boom or bust”. Some days I would feel fine and on those days, I would graft as hard as I could to try to cram everything in. It was an anxious time. I didn’t know what was happening to me.
